Abstract |
This dataset represents the boundary of archaeological study areas as carried out for archaeological reporting within New South Wales. These study area boundaries have been captured from archaeological reports as catalogued within the Aboriginal Heritage Information Management System (AHIMS) under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974. |

Lineage |
Archaeological reports dating back to January 1973 have been used to capture corresponding survey boundaries. These reports have been digitally captured in a polygon format as a number of individual projects since the early 1990s. Early survey boundary information was captured in ERMS GIS format (a NPWS GIS format used in the 1990s) and then converted into ArcView shapefile format in 1998. This converted data has then been merged with other survey boundary data captured since 1998. It should be noted that survey boundary polygons have not been built using ArcInfo and shapefiles overlap as a result. In 2009 - 2010 Emmanuel Fewquandie, Country Culture & Heritage Division, was tasked to update the database with outstanding survey areas for NSW. During this process the attribute table was reorganised and updated as well. |

Explanation |
Survey boundaries have been digitised from maps of sufficient quality as included within archaeological reports. The boundary of each survey does not represent an area that has been fully surveyed to any standard level, ie such as a transect line that might represent a certain type of ground survey. Rather it represents an area that might have been generically covered based on survey as part of environmental impact assessment or other archaeological research. For a fuller understanding on the level and intensity of survey within a survey boundary, reference should be made to the archaeological report which will cover such issues as research design and methodology and Aboriginal sites already recorded and new sites recorded as part of this archaeological report. |

Explanation |
The primary attribute for each report is the AHIMS catalogue number. Other attributes such as report name, report type, report author and report type have subsequently been linked. During the digitising process the scale of map, data capture project and person carrying out the digitising has been recorded. The AHIMS catalogue number has been used to link the archaeological report name, report author and report type that has been exported from the AHIMS digital database. |
