Bongil Bongil NP Vegetation

Abstract

Fine scale vegetation community mapping for Bongil Bongil National Park (NP), plus mapping within a surrounding 500m buffer of the park.

Associated report: MA Cameron, PR Sheringham, RJ Hunter, M Smith. Survey and Mapping of the Vegetation of Bongil Bongil National Park. June 2011. NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. 111 vegetation survey sites were analysed to delimit 33 vegetation communities ranging from sedgeland and wetlands to wet and dry open forest and rainforest. The associated vegetation survey data is available from NSW Bionet-Atlas. VIS ID 3856.

Lineage

The vegetation communities of Bongil Bongil NP have been derived from quantitative analysis of 111 systematic full floristic sites. These communities have been modelled & mapped spatially using Definiens object-oriented analysis software. Spatial predictors used in modelling/mapping were 1 - Substrate - near surface quaternary geology. 2 - LiDAR. Elevation and tree height data. 3 - Forestry Disturbance. Collated from reports and local historical knowledge. 4 - Terrain. Aspect and slope classes. An initial spatial community map was then assessed for accuracy using 184 rapid floristic data points collected in the field using GPS. These sites were subsequently inserted back into the initial output for refinement and remodelling to produce a final vegetation map. The map has 33 vegetation communities along with landcover classes, 'Cleared', 'Sand' 'Water' & 'Ocean'. The Bongil Bongil NP mapping has been performed in accordance with the NSW Native Vegetation Type Mapping Strategy 2009-2013 and the Native Vegetation Interim Type Standard (see Other Metadata for reference)

DQ Completeness Commission

Effective date

2001-01-01

Explanation

No systematic test performed Bongil Bongil NP plus an approx buffered area of 500m has been mapped as of gazettal at Feb 2010. The mapping can be regarded as final though botanical expertise recommends further targeted survey to refine the classification of sedge land and Sydney Blue Gum (E. saligna) areas. It is envisaged that this further work will be in the realm of 'update and maintenance' rather than incompleteness. No floristic sites or rapid data points were collected off-park in the buffered area.

DQ Absolute External Positional Accuracy

Effective date

Explanation

1 - 10 metre accuracy.

DQ Non Quantitative Attribute Correctness

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

33 vegetation communities were derived using 111 full floristic sites statistically analysed in PATN software. These communities were then mapped/modelled spatially and checked against 184 rapid data points. No floristic sites or rapid data points were collected off-park in the buffered area. Draft thematic map accuracy assessment was at approx. 65% prior to reinserting the rapid data points for final mapping/modelling. Final revised accuracy is in the vicinity of 90% whereby modelled communities across disturbed metasediment landscapes were less accurate (approx 80% after RDPs inserted) compared to mapped/well known communities on alluvial where accuracy is estimate at closer to 100%. The overall 90% accuracy estimate combines both estimates.
