Title

Coal Seam Gas Boreholes

Abstract

Information about and locations of wells drilled to explore for, assess or extract potential coal seam gas resources. The coal seam gas boreholes dataset stores information about CSG sites within NSW. The dataset has been developed to record summary data on CSG exploration and development drilling for holes drilled in New South Wales. The dataset contains summary information about each drillhole such as location, total depth, azimuth/dip, wireline logs, core availability and library location and DIGS references. This data is part of the New South Wales Geoscientific Data Warehouse (NSW GDW) series.

Lineage

The primary data source for the Mineralsdataset is company exploration reports supplied to the Department of Industry as part of the statutory reporting requirements for exploration licences under the NSW Mining Act 1992. Information regarding holes drilled by the Department of Industry has also been included. Approximately 22 000 drillholes were captured on a contract basis by Tech and Field Surveys from July, 1998 - July, 2000. During the validation of this dataset by Departmental staff a number of additional drillholes drilled prior to 2000 have been identified and added to the database. These records form the basis of the drillholes dataset. In 2000, the Department formally introduced digital reporting of drillholes records in statutory reporting. Drillhole records were stored in the Digital Imaging Geological System (DIGS) until 2009 when they were extracted into a SQL Server database. Data continues to be captured from compulsory company reporting under the NSW Mining Act 1992 and extracted from DIGS. As new reports being non-confidential, the data is released as part of this dataset and made available to the public. Validation work continues to this day and the accuracy of the dataset is being continuously improved.
