Lineage

The dataset is a derivative of the original CRAFTI dataset and is spatially identical. For further information on the CRAFTI dataset see the metadata or final report for this process. This dataset was created by splitting the strucfinal field into the growth stage, stand density, and disturbance indicators fields. Done for ease of calculation and to make the fields more user friendly. Once this was complete and any errors removed, strucfinal types were categorised from 1-7 by way of a decision matrix and assigned this number in the category field. The NATCODE was calculated by taking the above matrix one step further, categories 1-5 being classed as "MR", 6 as "SM", and 7 as "SU".

An explanation of the NATCODE classes follows: The Modified Recoverable, Substantially Unmodified and Substantially Modified classification has been derived for the purpose of Wilderness assessments. One of the criteria for assessing wilderness is "Naturalness". Section 6 of the Wilderness Act states: naturalness: In wilderness assessments, available evidence and observations enable study areas to be classified into the three required classes substantially unmodified (SU), modified recoverable (MR) and substantially modified (SM) using the following criteria: * the extent of late succession vegetation cover; * the extent of soil development * the degree and extent of disturbed areas and the grouping of these into natural or human induced disturbances; * the possibility of, and likely time required for, restoration.
