Title

Cumberland Plain Priority Conservation Lands

Abstract

The Cumberland Plain Priority Conservation Lands data was created to inform the Cumberland Plain Recovery Plan. For more information see: Report on the methodology for identifying priority conservation lands on the Cumberland Plain July 2010: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/threatenedspecies/CumberlandPlainRecoveryPlan.htm.; ; The Priority Conservation Lands identified the larger, better condition and better-connected remnants of vegetation on the Cumberland Plain whilst incorporating a sample of all EECs and attempting to incorporate habitat values for threatened species and regionally significant suites of species. Additional sites were included for endemic threatened plants where they were not adequately represented in the remnants.

Lineage

Any decision to invest in private land conservation on the basis of this layer must be accompanied by site inspection. This layer is not to be used as a substitute for threatened species/endangered ecological communities assessment required under the Threatened Species Conservation Act or Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.; The layer was generated by selecting all remnants of vegetation at least 50ha and within 500m of priority flora/fauna records. Eight major regional clusters were identified. These were refined by removal of built-up areas, narrow/linear remnants and private and public infrastructure using 2007 air photos, 2005 SPOT imagery 2000/01 aerial photo imagery and zoning maps. For each EEC sites were selected from the remnant that contained the largest area in decreasing order until at least 15% of the extant area of each targeted EEC was included in the final boundary. Ground truthing was undertaken to confirm the site's suitability for future conservation management. The assessment has also set minimum targets for the inclusion of the threatened flora species and endangered populations. Additional threatened plant sites were included to ensure these targets were met.; Digitising was conducted at a scale of approximately 1:5,000.; The vegetation mapping used to select the priority areas is accurate to a scale of 1:25000. This mapping is based on air photos that are several years old. Updated 2007air photos and 2005 SPOT imagery were used to refine the boundaries. Ground truthing of the priority areas was undertaken and lands no longer vegetated were excluded from the final priority area layer.; ; The layer identifies the larger, better connected and better condition remnants of vegetation remaining on the Cumberland Plain. Further work could be undertaken to examine areas of unclassified vegetation. The layer will require periodic updating to account for any clearing or vegtetation change resulting from future landuse activites.
