Abstract

Throughout most of New South Wales native grasslands have been extensively cleared or modified, and now mainly occur as small remnants. Within the Namoi Catchment in northern NSW, grasslands remnants that occur on the Liverpool Plains and floodplain areas adjacent to the lower Namoi River are considered to be part of the community Natural grasslands on basalt and fine-textured alluvial plains of northern New South Wales (NSW) and southern Queensland that is listed as Critically Endangered under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.

Areas of native grassland in the Namoi Catchment that are likely to be remnants of the EPBC-listed grassland were mapped using a combination of extensive field validation, existing vegetation mapping, historic information from Parish and Portion plans, and various spatial layers. Extant and pre-European vegetation maps for the Namol Catchment were also updated during the mapping of the EPBC-listed grasslands.

The mapping produced by this project confirms that EPBC-listed grasslands have been extensively cleared, with about 5% of the pre-European extent remaining. About 8,900 hectares remain out of a probable pre-European extent of about 183,000 hectares. Most of the remnants are small and many occur on public land, particularly on Travelling Stock Routes. There are also good examples on private land, although no examples are known from conservation reserves in the Namoi Catchment. (VIS ID 3852)

  1. Existing Liverpool Plains grassland mapping ; An existing map of the possible distribution of the Liverpool Plains grasslands (Lang 2008) was rectified and converted to a shapefile for use in GIS. Lang (2008) used a combination of ground truthing and historical mapping from Portion, Parish and Australian Agriculture Gompany Plans to attempt to delineate the extent of true grassland on the Liverpool Plains. ;
  2. Polygons from extant and pre-European maps ; A subset of polygons that could potentially include EPBC-listed native grasslands was extracted from the extant vegetation layer for the Namoi Gatchment. This subset included polygons of the derived and natural occurrences of RVCs 26 and 29 that occurred within the footprint of the pre-1750 extent of grassland on the Liverpool Plains and for the entire floodplain area west of Narrabri, and polygons of derived grassland (RVO 28) that occurred within the footprint of the extent of the Liverpool Plains grasslands as mapped by Lang (2008). ;
  3. Other spatial data ; Various GIS layers such as soils landscapes, geology, SPOT imagery, Google Earth, digital elevation models (DEMs), 'nativeness mapping' (Department of Environment and Climate Change DECC 2008) and topographic map mosaic were used to assist in determining the extant and pre-European distribution of the EPBC-listed grassland. ;
  4. HISTORIC DATA ; 4.1 Parish plans ; Historic Parish plans for the floodplain area west of Narrabri were accessed via the Department of Lands website (Department of Lands 2009) and any notations referring to vegetation were recorded in a spreadsheet with Parish name, plan year and notation. A point location was also included in a shapefile for each notation. These points were then used as a guide to modifying the pre-European vegetation map and the attribution of derived' grassland polygons. Historical plans for about 90 Parish areas on the floodplain west of Narrabri were viewed on the Department of Lands website. ; 4.2 Lot and DP plans ; Historic plans for individual lots sometimes have notations relating to the vegetation distribution at the time of the survey. As these plans are only available online through purchase, and the area of interest west of Narrabri included thousands of plans, accessing a large number of plans via the website was not considered practical due to time and cost constraints. However, one day was spent in the Department of Lands office in Moree checking and obtaining copies of portion plans in areas of potential grassland between Narrabri and west of Burren Junction. Notations within the plans on vegetation, soils and land form were used as a guide to modifying the pre-European vegetation map and the attribution of 'derived' grassland polygons. ;
  5. CONSULTATION ; Several people who have relevant knowledge of grassland communities in the area were consulted to help to gain an understanding of the likely distribution of the EPBC-listed grassland community in the Namoi Catchment. ;
  6. FIELD RECONNAISSANCE ; Extensive field checking was carried out by driving many of the public roads, particularly in the floodplain area west of Narrabri. Less field checking was done in the Liverpool Plains area as this had been more of a focus for mapping of grasslands in the extant and pre-European mapping projects (ELA 2009a,b). Many GPS waypoints were recorded to assist mapping of grassland areas and for validation and updating of the extant and pro-European layers. ;
  7. UPDATING GRASSLAND MAPPING ; The derived and natural grassland polygons in the extant vegetation map (ELA 2009a) were chocked in GIS using the contextual spatial layers, and tagged in the shapefile attribute table as probable, possible or unlikely to examples of extant patches of the EPBC-listed grassland. Some polygons were also checked during the field checking phase and these were tagged as having been field checked. The likely RVC for all polygons was also added to the attribute table with RVCs 26 and 29 split into a derived occurrence component (26d and 29d) and a natural occurrence component (26t and 29t). Polygons that were observed to have been cropped were deleted from the layer. Only polygons that were attributed as probable were considered to be natural occurrences (26t or 29t). The final layer was cleaned to remove overlapping polygons, identified gaps and polygons of less than 0.1 ha in area. These small polygons were merged into the adjacent polygon which shared the longest common boundary. ;
  8. UPDATING EXTANT AND PRE-1750 MAPPING ; The grassland polygons tagged as probable were used to update the extant vegetation map. Various other edits of the pro-European vegetation map were undertaken during the stages described above. The final pre-European layer was then cleaned to remove overlapping polygons, identified gaps and polygons of less than 0.5 ha in area. These small polygons were merged into the adjacent polygon which shared the longest common boundary. A few small polygons (, 0.5 ha) which were coded with highly restricted RVCs were retained in the final layer.
