Abstract |
Validating the extent of modelled "rare and vulnerable forest ecosystems" identified during the Southern CRA (Comprehensive Regional Assessment), 1997-2000, was required for ecologically sustainable conservation management of reserves within the NPWS South Coast Region. The validation was for 47 forest ecosystems out of a total of 96 forest ecosystems that occur in the NPWS South Coast Region. Considerable improvements were made to the reliability and accuracy of the vegetation ecosystem map. Some 3000 edits were incorporated into the revised forest ecosystem map. Six new ecosystems were newly classified as part of this contract. VIS_ID 4137 |

Key environmental layers were first identified that could support the desktop updating of the vegetation map, as well as for planning of field survey of new floristic samples within targeted vegetation polygons identified by the NPWS. Base layers considered useful in this project are shown in Table 1 (see Report). Geological data supplied by Department of Mineral Resources were checked for coverage and consistency. To help with interpretation of the canopy layer used in the revision of the mapping of vegetation, a Landsat TM coverage, produced in 1999, was used as a base background layer. See Report for more details. |
