Abstract

Gibraltar Range and southern Washpool National Parks vegetation mapping was undertaken by Paul Sheringham and Dr John T. Hunter in 2002 by contract for the NPWS Northern Tableland Region. The study area includes Gibraltar Range National Park and the southern section of the Washpool National Park on the north coast and northern tablelands in north eastern New South Wales. The park is located on the Great Diving Range approximately 90 km east of Grafton and about 65 km east Glen Innes. The Gibraltar range straddles the northern tablelands and north coast botanical subdivisions.

The vegetation of Gibraltar Range and southern Washpool National Parks is described and mapped (scale 1:25 000). Twelve communities are defined based on PATN analysis, a thirteen is defined based on previous investigations, ten broad community associations are mapped. These ten mapping communities were mapped based on ground truthing, air photo interpretation and landform. Two communities are considered vulnerable and three rare. Most communities are of open forest structure, although sedgelands, heaths, woodlands, mallee scrubs, tall open forests and closed forests also occur. Many of the communities show considerable variation and intergrade along common boundaries.

Lineage

The report contains the results of a vegetation survey of Gibraltar Range National Park and the southern part of Washpool National Park. The vegetation survey was completed at the request of the Glen Innes East Area, Northern Tablelands NPWS Region. The aim of the survey was to collect information on the flora of the study area to assist in the preparation of plans of management, fire management plans and on ground management of these areas. The Glen Innes East Area required that existing information from previous floristic surveys be collated and an additional 124 sites be surveyed in order to complete a comprehensive survey of the vegetation and flora.

The requirement of the survey were: • Collate existing information from previous vegetation surveys conducted within the Gibraltar Range National Park and southern section of Washpool National Park. • 9 sites surveyed during the Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA) vegetation surveys of upper northeast New South Wales. • 18 sites surveyed by the National Parks & Wildlife Service during a study of Public land of upper northeast New South Wales by the Natural Resources Audit Council. • 34 sites surveyed by Hunter (1999) of granitic outcrops and adjacent forests. • 3 sites surveyed during the North East Forest Biodiversity study (NPWS, 1994). • 12 sites surveyed by Floyd (1990) in his survey of Rainforest in New South Wales. • to carry out a full floristic vegetation survey of the study area using a stratified random stratification based on selected environmental variables to locate sites. • to produce a series of vegetation community profiles for each community identified; • to comment on the regional significance of the vegetation communities identified; • identify ROTAP and TSC Act species and their occurrence; • identify regionally significant species; • to identify and map weed species occurrences; • to provide known information on the fire ecology of species and communities;. • preparation of a vegetation map based on communities as defined by PATN analysis; • provide management recommendations, and • collection of voucher specimens for reference.
