Abstract

Goonoowigal State Conservation Area vegetation mapping was undertaken by Dr John T. Hunter in 2008 by contract for the NPWS Northern Tableland Region. Goonoowigall SCA lies approximately 10 km south east of Inverell within the Nandewar Bioregion and the North Western Slopes Botanical District. The reserve contains approximately 1037 ha of lands.

The vegetation of Goonoowigall State Conservation Area is described and mapped (scale 1:50 000). Eight communities are defined based on classification (Kulczynski association). These eight communities were mapped based on ground truthing, air photo interpretation and landform. Much of the reserve is characterised by Callitris endlicheri, Angophora floribunda, Eucalyptus prava and Eucalyptus bridgesiana with shrub layer of Leucopogon muticus, Leptospermum brevipes, Brachyloma daphnoides and Acacia neriifolia and a herb layer of Cheilanthes sieberi, Cymbopogon refractus, Aristida ramosa, Microlaena stipoides and Pomax umbellata.

Lineage

Dr John T. Hunter prepared the report of the vegetation of the Goonoowigall State Conservation Area. Aims included the collation of existing information from previous floristic surveys and that the survey of 26, 20 x 20 m stratified full vascular plant floristic sites is carried out in order to complete a comprehensive investigation of the vegetation and flora of Goonoowigall SCA. This report represents the findings of this study. The collated information is to be used as a guide for management purposes.

The requirements of the investigation were: 1. Collate existing information from previous vegetation surveys conducted within the conservation areas. 2. Site placement to be based on selected environmental variables and be distributed based on the area they occupy. 3. Identify weed species and their occurrence. 4. Identify RoTAP, EPB&C Act and TSC Act species and their occurrence. 5. Identify regionally significant species. 6. Provide known fire ecology information on species and communities. 7. Construction of a vegetation map based on communities as defined by classification4 and ordination analyses. 8. Provide management recommendations.
