Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2022 |
Abstract |
The Greater Sydney Region 2022 canopy dataset provides information on tree canopy cover, vegetation health, land surface temperature, and individual trees for the metropolitan urban area and metropolitan rural area of Greater Sydney. This data can be analysed from the individual tree point to regional scale. Having current and accurate estimates of tree canopy supports councils and government to reliably identify areas of tree canopy and confidently develop urban greening and heat island mitigation strategies and actions. This dataset provides the user with information at a known spatial accuracy. The dataset is based off aerial imagery with a resolution of 0.16cm to 0.48m (dependent on spectral band) captured by ArborCarbon Pty Ltd. This dataset can be accessed by Greater Sydney councils, NSW Government employees, and external organisations contracted to councils or NSW Government (subject to department assessment and approval). Please fill out this form to access the dataset. Users will be required to sign a Digital Data Deed Poll to access the data. NSW Department of Planning staff can access the dataset via the Information Asset Register. A version of the 2022 canopy dataset, summarised to Modified Mesh Block, is publicly available on the SEED portal here. In the dataset, “tree canopy” is classified as all vegetation greater than 3m. “All vegetation” includes all vegetation, including tree canopy, greater than 0m. Name: Tree Canopy Summarised by LGA and Suburb (2022 and 2019) Protocol: WWW:DOWNLOAD-1.0-http--download Description: The excel document “Tree Canopy Summarised by LGA and Suburb (2022 and 2019)’’ provides statistics for canopy cover for the metropolitan urban area of Greater Sydney. The primary 2022 data was calculated using the underlying 2022 raster imagery, the comparison 2019 dataset was calculated using the 2019 raster imagery modified to the same boundaries as the 2022 dataset. The statistics are summarised by Local Government Area and suburb, for the 2019 and 2022 Greater Sydney canopy datasets. The statistics have been summarised for the metropolitan urban area of Greater Sydney as this is the geographic area previously analysed. Statistics for the Total LGA and Suburb areas for the 2019 dataset have also been included for reference. Best efforts were made to develop comparable statistics for the 2019 and 2022 canopy datasets using the raster base imagery. However due to differences in data acquisition and processing methods, there may be some variation in the summary statistics. Care should be taken when comparing canopy cover between datasets, especially in LGAs with a lower proportion of Metropolitan Urban Area, as some observed differences may be a result of variations in methodologies rather than actual change in canopy cover.
