Data - Draft report: koala survey of the Mid North Coast Assessment Area |
Abstract |
The asset includes the observational data collected by the Koala Science team, drone surveys between April and July 2024 within the Mid North Coast Assessment Area and adjoining national park estate referred to as the Study Area. This includes the survey site locations, individual koala observations and a summary of survey site detections. |

Final Report - Koala survey of the Mid North Coast Assessment Area - 2024 |
Name: Final Report - Koala survey of the Mid North Coast Assessment Area - 2024 Protocol: WWW:DOWNLOAD-1.0-http--download Description: The purpose of this report is to provide detail on the survey findings which are intended to support NSW Government decision-making in relation to the assessment area. The report provides a current map of koala sightings and predicted population abundance in the assessment area, together with an overall koala population estimate for the assessment area. This data was gathered at an ecologically significant scale utilising cutting-edge aerial drone technology specifically designed for koala surveys. This approach is now considered one of the best methods to accurately count koalas (Beranek et al. 2024). Rigorous modelling was then undertaken to understand key ecological and environmental influences associated with koala abundance across the assessment area. Function: download |
Glider observations in the Mid North Coast assessment area |
Name: Glider observations in the Mid North Coast assessment area Protocol: WWW:DOWNLOAD-1.0-http--download Description: Ancillary report to 'Koala survey of the Mid North Coast assessment area' In 2023, the NSW Government committed to establishing a Great Koala National Park on the Mid North Coast. To provide high-quality data on the koala populations in the 176,000 ha of state forest that is being considered for inclusion in the proposed Great Koala National Park, the Koala Science Team within the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water developed a survey for the area. Observations of other species were also made during the koala drone surveys, including 2 threatened glider species: the southern greater glider (Petauroides volans) and the yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis). Overall, findings show substantial spatial variation in the abundance and distribution of southern greater gliders, and indicate the apparent rarity of yellow-bellied gliders in the assessment area and in the adjacent national parks.
