NSW BioNet Flora Survey Plots – PCT Reference Sites |
Alternative title(s) |
VIS Flora Survey |
Abstract |
This is a dataset of the NSW BioNet Flora Survey Data Collection that is maintained via the Flora Survey Module of the NSW BioNet Atlas application. This collection is a central, authoritative database for systematic vegetation survey data in NSW. This dataset includes full floristic survey sites that have been allocated to PCTs through the quantitative classification method outlined in A revised classification of plant communities of eastern New South Wales (DPE 2022). https://environment.nsw.gov.au/research-and-publications/publications-search/a-revised-classification-of-plant-communities-of-eastern-new-south-wales. As such these sites are reference sites for quantitative PCTs. Access The full datasets (sites and species) may be accessed via the BioNetAtlas application http://www.BioNet.nsw.gov.au/. Site-level data (without species) is available in a machine readable form via the BioNet OData Web Service https://data.bionet.nsw.gov.au/. That OData data service is delivered to SEED where it is rendered as a map layer (i.e. Web Map Service). |

Purpose |
Flora Survey data are used in environmental assessment and planning, and for purposes of scientific research. This data supports the development of i) a quantitatively derived NSW Plant Community Type classification, ii) vegetation type condition benchmarks, iii) Plant Community Type mapping, and iv) species distribution modelling. Products i) & ii) are used directly in NSW metric based assessment processes including, Property Vegetation Planning, BioBanking, BioMetric and BioCertification. Products iii) & iv) are used indirectly to support the maintenance of data content used in these assessment processes. Data in this collection are distributed to the National TERN / AEKOS Australian Ecological Survey Database. Species occurrence records are also made available through the BioNet Species Sightings data collection, from where they are distributed to the National Alas of Living Australia. |

Lineage |
The BioNet Flora Survey Data Collection is maintained in the "VIS Flora Survey module" of BioNet. This collection was originally developed and maintained in stand-alone databases known as YETI. YETI was developed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service as a Microsoft Access database designed to enter, query and massage data from plot-based vegetation surveys into data formats required for use in analysis software packages such as PATN (Text archive format), R or S-Plus, Primer, PC-ORD and CANOCO (Condensed Cornell format). This functionality is supported in all subsequent versions. In 2007, as a first step in centralising the management and access to vegetation survey data, a centralised SQL database was established within OEH. The MS Access front-end application was retained with additional functionality, including the ability to choose between back-end files stored in MS Access or the SQL Server. This allowed OEH users to access YETI as a centralised database, while external users continued to use the standalone MS Access version. Progressively, standalone versions have been harvested into the centralised SQL database. In 2009, YETI was modified to align with new field survey protocols (and field survey sheets) documented in the NSW Native Vegetation Interim Type Standards . A modular field survey approach was introduced which included, for the first time, a vegetation condition survey protocol developed for the Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting Program (MER) for vegetation condition. In 2011, YETI was integrated into the BioNet-Atlas database to be managed along with species sightings, fauna survey and threatened species profiles. At this point YETI was renamed the VIS Flora Survey Module reflecting the investment in the NSW Vegetation Information System project to build and integrated information systems for vegetation plots, classification and maps. |
