Title

NSW Mineral Occurrences

Abstract

Locations of over 31,000 types of minerals throughout NSW, including coal, gas, gemstones and construction materials. This spatial dataset is a derivative product of the New South Wales Mineral Occurence Database (also known as New South Wales MetIndEx). It records over 31,000 known mineral occurrences throughout NSW. These records have been compiled from resource and production data compiled from both historic and current mining operations records held by the Geological Survey of NSW. Data records start from a state-wide Metallogenic Mapping program developed by the Survey in the late 1960s and are continuously improved via mandatory reporting. The alternative name MetIndEx refers to the METallics, INDustrial minerals and Exploration discoveries database of economic mineral deposits and occurrences in New South Wales. The data has been migrated over various databases from Microsoft Access to Oracle and SQL Server. The location data has also had multiple datum changes since the original database was compiled. The data is being continuously improved and refined by the custodians on an irregular basis. This data is part of the New South Wales Geoscientific Data Warehouse (NSW GDW) series.

Lineage

The primary data source for the Mineralsdataset is company exploration reports supplied to the Department of Industry as part of the statutory reporting requirements for exploration licences under the NSW Mining Act 1992. Information regarding holes drilled by the Department of Industry has also been included. Approximately 22 000 drillholes were captured on a contract basis by Tech and Field Surveys from July, 1998 - July, 2000. During the validation of this dataset by Departmental staff a number of additional drillholes drilled prior to 2000 have been identified and added to the database. These records form the basis of the drillholes dataset. In 2000, the Department formally introduced digital reporting of drillholes records in statutory reporting. Drillhole records were stored in the Digital Imaging Geological System (DIGS) until 2009 when they were extracted into a SQL Server database. Data continues to be captured from compulsory company reporting under the NSW Mining Act 1992 and extracted from DIGS. As new reports being non-confidential, the data is released as part of this dataset and made available to the public. Validation work continues to this day and the accuracy of the dataset is being continuously improved.
