NSW soil profiles |
Abstract |
Statewide dataset of soil profiles, comprising (at time of writing) ~73,000 separate observations of soil physical and chemical characteristics, along with (in most cases) information about the landscape in which they occur (including landform, geology, vegetation, hydrology, land use and land degradation). Data is added by both NSW Government agencies and members of the wider NSW community using standardised Soil Data Cards, an internet application called eDIRT and is stored in the NSW Soil and Land Information System (SALIS). Online Maps: Part of this area is also covered by other soil mapping products, see the soil map index in eSPADE. eSPADE contains a suite of soil and landscape information including soil profile data. Many of these datasets have hot-linked soil reports. An alternative viewer is the SEED Map; an ideal way to see what other natural resources datasets (e.g. vegetation) are available for this map area. Purpose |
To describe the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils of NSW and thereby aid in their conservation and sustainable use and management. This dataset fulfils a requirement of Part 2, 4C of the NSW Soil Conservation Act (1938) for the NSW Government to maintain a repository of information about the soils of NSW. |

Additional information source |
This dataset uses attributes and values defined in both the eDIRT User Manual for the Digital Infield Regolith Tool (eDIRT) version 1.1, available at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/edirtwebapp/app/views/helps/help.pdf and the Soil Data Entry Handbook, 3rd Edition (Milford et al. 2001), available at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/resources/soils/salissoildataentryhandbook.pdf. Both documents represent the State standard and are broadly compliant with the National standard as defined in the Australian Land and Soil Survey Field Handbook (McDonald et al. 1990). Approximately two thirds of the dataset is Publicly available and can be supplied outside the Department. The remainder of the dataset consists of Internal data (for Departmental use only) and Confidential data (held in confidence by the Department on behalf of its owner(s)). |

Lineage |
This data set has resided in various databases with the following history of development. Originally data was stored in the NSW Soil Data System (SDS), an Informix SQL system introduced in 1988. Subsequently in 2000, the NSW SDS was succeeded by the first version of SALIS, a Centura client-server application with an Oracle Spatial database. This system was developed through successive versions over the next fifteen years, until its final iteration (SALIS 4) was replaced in 2015 by SALIS 5, a thin-client Microsoft .NET application over a Microsoft SQLserver database. |
