Abstract

In 2012, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) commissioned Eco Logical Australia (ELA) to conduct a comprehensive vegetation survey of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and Oxley Wild Rivers State Conservation Areareserves. The results of this vegetation survey are the classification and mapping of the vegetation communities and vegetation communities of conservation significance. The survey results are 36 broad mapping units and 63 fine-scale vegetation communities. Where possible, the classification used existing vegetation. However, the current vegetation communities in this pre-existing classification system were not always adequate to cover the vegetation observed, so an additional 16 communities were described for the park as part of the current project.

Lineage

The vegetation across the study area was mapped using high resolution ADS40 aerial imagery using a combination of 2D and 3D computer screen interfaces. A total of 7,040 polygons were captured which represent 36 broad mapping units and 63 fine-scale vegetation communities. Where possible, the classification used existing vegetation types recently defined for the former Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NR CMA) region by the OEH. However, the current vegetation communities in this pre-existing classification system were not always adequate to cover the vegetation observed in OWRNP, so an additional 16 communities were described for the park as part of the current project.
