Title |
Reliable Surface Water in NSW |
Abstract |
This map was created by the Department of Primary Industries (Office of Water) in 2013 to identify areas in NSW with a reliable surface water supply. Land with reliable surface water was defined as areas:
Reliable surface water mapping along with two other datasets (rainfall of 350mm for more per annum - 9 out of 10 years and highly productive groundwater) are used to identify land with access to a reliable water supply, forming part of the regional and site level assessment classification of Biophysical Strategic Agricultural Land (BSAL). Under the Mining SEPP, all State Significant Development applications require a Site Verification Certificate to determine if their site contains any BSAL and therefore requiring further assessment from the Mining and Petroleum Gateway Panel. This process is managed by Planning and Assessment, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and are custodian of the dataset. A pdf map and GIS shapefile of this dataset is accessible from the resources section of the metadata. |

Lineage |
This map was derived from the merging of three buffered (150 metres) drainage datasets incorporating regulated rivers/creeks and all watercourses with a stream order classification of three or greater. The resulting areas are identified as having reliable surface water in NSW The regulated rivers dataset was based on existing water sharing plan (WSP) during 2013 and information about the WSPs are provided in the attribute table of the GIS shapefile. Other watercourse datasets used the Strahler classification method to assign stream order to watercourse segments. |

Explanation |
The three described datasets identifying reliable surface water are provided in the download resource package. This was the method that DPI Water delivered the GIS package originally in 2013. In some situations, rivers identified using stream order, may also have a water sharing plan and regulated. Linework for these areas have both been preserved in the GIS datasets under each category. Also all buffered surfaces within the GIS files have been kept in the three datasets and as a result, some overlapping of features occur and are intended/valid. These may occur around the intersection of watercourses. |
