Abstract

An assessment of saltmarsh of Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River by NSW Department of Primary Industries, Cronulla. The first map showing the distribution of saltmarsh for the Parramatta River-Sydney Harbour estuary was created from aerial photos taken in the late 1970s (West et al. 1985). A subsequent map prepared from photos taken in 2000 (West et al. 2004) suggested there had been little change in distribution. However, recent anecdotal reports indicate that there may be many more small patches of saltmarsh than can be defined with aerial photography. Aerial photography and pedestrian survey were used to locate saltmarsh on the foreshore of the Parramatta River-Sydney Harbour, including the estuarine portions of Middle Harbour, Lane Cove River and Duck River. The location, condition and species composition of each patch was determined. Saltmarsh was defined as any intertidal community containing one or more species defined as "Characteristic Species" by the NSW Scientific Committee (2004) in its listing of Coastal Saltmarsh as an Endangered Ecological Community. The most recent aerial photographic coverage of the catchment of the Parramatta River was obtained. The boundaries of saltmarsh were mapped via onscreen digitising using Arcview version 3.3. To ensure consistent spatial accuracy, all digitising was carried out at an onscreen scale of 1: 700 or better. Presumptive maps of saltmarsh were printed at various scales to facilitate on-ground observations. Comprehensive pedestrian and boat based field surveys were carried out of the estuary's entire shoreline, with all saltmarsh patches identified field recorded, regardless of size. The results of field surveys were used to correct and re digitise the preliminary map as appropriate.

This 2006 version was supplied as a final step to Stage 2 in 2008. It has less polygons (757) than the former version (772).

Lineage

For more information see: Kelleway, J., Williams, R.J. and Allen, C.B. (2007) An Assessment of the Saltmarsh of the Parramatta River and Sydney Harbour. NSW Dept. of Primary Industries, Cronulla. API was carried out on screen using ArcView v3.3 using 195 digital, ortho-rectified colour aerial photographs in a mosaic ECW format grid file. The aerial photography for the API was captured in April 2003 to a resolution of 15cm per pixel. Other datasets used to assist in the API included 2m contour lines (DEM), the Sydney digital 1:50,000 scale soils map, cadastre, 20cm pixel 2001 digital, ortho-rectified aerial photographs, NSW Maritime legal property title boundary, and digitised and hard copy vegetation maps from, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) (ex NPWS), LGAs, Botanic Gardens Trust and other. Data collection method: Preliminary aerial photography interpretation performed to identify potential ecological communities of different structures and condition. Field maps of aerial photography with API polygons were printed at 1:800 or finer for saltmarsh surveys. Comprehensive field surveys of the entire estuarine shoreline were by foot and/or boat as needed for access. Surveys were conducted between June 2005 and June 2006 for saltmarsh data. Maps were annotated in the field and attributes tabulated. Most saltmarsh patches were too small (50% of patches less than 30m squared) to accurately display on the printed preliminary maps, so patch shapes were also drawn on waterproof paper. These maps and tabulations were used to finalise the API. API, data capture, digitising, editing, checking and a final topological consistency check of the data set was done by Jeff Kelleway (NSW DPI) with assistance from Chris Allen (Botanic Gardens Trust (DEC)). Final product in ArcView shapefile format. Aerial photographs used had a positional accuracy of less than 0.5m. All Polygons were digitised on screen at a scale of 1:800 or finer. Attributes for all polygons were described on the basis of field surveys. Attribute tables were checked for consistency. All polygons are labelled with an identifier. No polygons have more than one label. Polygons were visually checked for their distribution in terms of locality and for overlaps. Spatial data was checked to ensure that: all classified polygons are closed; nodes are formed at the intersection of lines; that there are no multi-part shapes; and that there is only one label within each polygon All features were mapped at a scale of 1:800 or finer, on the basis of comprehensive field surveying. This has meant that saltmarsh has been mapped down to an area of 0.2m2. All polygons are assigned a label "Coastal Saltmarsh (EEC)." All features were visually checked and compared with original aerial photos for completeness of mapping. All raster layers were compared to ensure completeness of coverage and to ensure no missing values.
