Abstract	Severn River Nature Reserve vegetation mapping was undertaken by Dr John T. Hunter in 2000 by contract for the NPWS Northern Tableland Region. The Clayton Chase additions to the Severn River Nature Reserve were mapped in 2005. Severn River Nature Reserve is located 50km north west of Glen Innes. The vegetation of Severn River Nature Reserve is described and mapped (scale 1:50000). Nine communities are defined based on PATN analysis and two specialised communities are broadened in their circumscription based on previously surveyed sites. Nine communities are mapped based on ground truthing, air photo interpretation and altitude. Most communities are of a Woodland structure, however Forests exist along with Shrublands and Herbfields. The distribution of communities is related to Aspect and Physiography mainly but also past disturbances and soil depth. Many of the communities show considerable variation and intergrade along common boundaries. A number of specialised communities are thought to be largely restricted to the reserve and nearby areas. Six communities previously mapped within Severn River Nature Reserve by Hunter (2000) were found within Clayton Chase. Two additional communities were sampled and described for this area in 2005. Lineage	Northern Tablelands Region required that existing information from previous floristic surveys be collated and that up to 50 stratified sites be surveyed in order to complete a comprehensive survey of the vegetation and flora of Severn River Nature Reserve. The report represents the findings of this survey. The collated information is to be used as a guide for management purposes. The requirements of the investigation were: 1. Collate existing information from previous vegetation surveys conducted within the Severn River Nature Reserve. Data sources recovered included 45 full floristic sites: • 29 sites conducted for the floristic inventory of the granitic outcrop vegetation of the New England Batholith (Hunter 1999) • 2 sites placed nearby Severn River Nature Reserve for a survey of Astrotricha roddii (Nadolny et al. 1998) • 14 Sites placed within or in close proximity to Severn River Nature Reserve by Le Brocque & Benson (1995). • Site descriptions conducted by Bowlay (1995) on the vegetation of Severn River Nature Reserve and surrounds. • Floristic investigations carried out as part of the Pindari Dam enlargement EIS. • Site descriptions conducted for a vegetation survey of granitic areas of the Northern Tablelands (Roberts 1983) 2. Site placement to be based on selected environmental variables and be distributed based on the area they occupy. 3. Identify weed species and their occurrence. 4. Identify ROTAP and TSC Act species and their occurrence. 5. Identify regionally significant species. 6. Provide known fire ecology information on species and communities. 7. Construction of a vegetation map based on communities as defined by PATN analysis. 8. Provide management recommendations. 9. Collection of voucher specimens for reference.
