Abstract

Vegetation community merged mapping for Towarri National Park by Sue Robertson (original veg survey), Lisa Hill and Travis Peake, 1999 to 2001. Mapping was done from aerial photographs dating from 1994. Work was carried out for the Upper Hunter NPWS District with contracts for different sections of the Reserve. The attribute table contains the version ("Year" field) of the data that was retained in the final merged layer. VIS_ID 666

Lineage

The Upper Hunter District of NPWS commissioned Sue Robertson in early 1999 to undertake a stratified plot-based vegetation survey of Towarri National Park. The aim of the sampling was to record different vegetation communities and flora species present in the reserve and to record information on the current environmental setting of each vegetation community. After vegetation sampling was complete Natural Assets were contracted to map the vegetation communities within the reserve, and to prepare vegetation community profiles on each vegetation type, in a manner consistent with Bell (1999) and Hill (1999). The mapping of vegetation and preparation of community profiles was to utilise data gathered by S. Robertson during her vegetation surveys. Profiles provide detailed information on eight of the nine vegetation communities mapped in the reserve. ; ; The western and southern portions of Towarri National Park was mapped at 1:25,000 scale in December 2000 by Lisa Hill using 1994 colour aerial photographs. A central portion was mapped also but the linework was redone and extended in 2001. Vegetation community boundaries were marked in ink on plastic overlays, with each community provided with a separate code. Reference to plot locations sampled by S. Robertson in early 1999 was made to ensure that community descriptions for those sites were consistent with those being mapped. Limited ground-truthing of community mapping was undertaken by means of a one hour helicopter flight over the reserve and traversing of a major ridge from one side of the reserve to the other. Analysis of the survey data provided by S. Robertson indicated that the Snow Gum Plateau Open Forest vegetation community was not adequately sampled. To meet this requirement, two plots were sampled in this community, with the results incorporated into mapping and the species list. One community, Disturbed Pasture, was not sampled, and therefore is not described in detail.; ; The main portion of the National Park was remapped in 2001 so that it gave a more uniform coverage of the Reserve. Travis Peake made amendments and additions as a result of additional survey work. The vegetation community work was used from previous years however. The new linework was digitised and the merged areas were cleaned and edited in the Coffs Harbour Office by Aleks Maric in August 2001.; ; The attribute table contains the version (by Year label) of the data that was retained in the final merged layer.
