Tweed LGA Vegetation 2012. VIS_ID 3912

Alternative title(s)

TweedLGA_2012_E_3912

Abstract

Tweed Shire Council Local Government Area Vegetation Mapping from various sources including Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA) data and further refined up to 2012.

In 2011 an update of the mapping was undertaken by Mark Kingston and Peter Hall. The bushland boundaries of Council’s existing vegetation mapping layer were updated and revised at approximately 1:5000 scale consistent with shire wide aerial photography captured during October 2009. Real and apparent changes to bushland between 2007 and 2009 are also reported. Boundaries between vegetation communities within areas of bushland were not updated.

NB. The current version was finalised January 2012 but was named Tweed_veg_2009_update by the Council since it was updated using Aerial Photography from 2009. VIS_ID 3912.

Lineage

Baseline data for the project were provided by TSC:

  1. Vegetation mapping (TWEED_SP_VEG2008_UPDATE.shp). This layer originated from the Tweed Vegetation Management Plan 2004 (TVMS) and was previously updated in 2008 based on 2007 aerial photography.

  2. 2009 Orthophoto tiles (Hinterland @ .35 mtr pixel; Flown October 2009)

  3. 2009 Orthophoto tiles (Coastal and hinterland villages @ .15mtr pixel Flown October 2009

  4. 2007 Orthophoto tiles (LGA; Flown May 2007)

The following steps were undertaken to revise and update the vegetation mapping supplied:

  1. Pre-processing to filter and remove very small polygons. The existing vegetation mapping contained approx 2500 island polygons, less than 1000 sq metres, that were recorded as “Not Assessed” vegetation type. The linework for these polygons had been derived programmatically via image analysis some years ago. At that time the available imagery was at a much coarser scale and the orthorectification was not as precise as is currently available. Examination of these polygons against the .15 pixel 2009 photographs revealed that many were subject to some degree of spatial misalignment. After discussion with Mark Kingston and John Turnbull (TSC) it was decided to remove the polygons from the vegetation layer. These polygons were tagged and appended to the editing layer described below.

  2. Visual comparison of 2007 and 2009 aerial photos. This stage involved the creation of an “edit” layer to identify and classify areas of actual and apparent change within the following categories:

  3. Incorporation of edits into vegetation layer. The existing vegetation layer was intersected with the editing layer, the linework and attributes updated and a new vegetation layer produced. Additional areas of bushland (code 1 above) identified during the update were ascribed the “Not Assessed” vegtype category. Adjacent polygons with the same attributes were dissolved.

  4. Post-processing to remove overlay artifacts. The vegetation layer was exported to TNTMips for an automated, controlled removal of several thousand small polygons (intersection artifacts) that satisfied any of the following criteria:

• Any “Not Assessed”, non-island veg polygon less than 1000 sq m

• Any “Not Assessed” veg polygon less than 2500 sq mtrs with extreme compactness ratio (>3) adjacent to a single bushland polygon

• Any polygon less than 250 sq m

Polygons falling into any of these categories were amalgamated with the adjacent bushland polygon.

  1. Data export

The updated vegetation and edits layers were topologically validated and exported to ArcGIS filegeodatabase format.
