Abstract |
A vegetation map was produced for the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NRCMA) by integrating two products undertaken for the northern Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA), namely the forest ecosystem model and API coverage. The work was undertaken by Eco Logical Australia Pty Ltd in 2005. The new product represents a substantial improvement over the original forest ecosystem model as it provides nomenclatural consistency between forest ecosystem types and API polygon labels, includes remnant vegetation not originally captured by the CRAFTI API project, improves the spatial rigour of forest ecosystem distribution, and introduces a number of new ecosystems based on fine scale API and expert advice. The map incorporates 167 ecosystems covering a combined area of 3,332,900 ha, about 67% of the NRCMA region. It includes dry and moisttableland types, rainforest and wet escarpment brushbox and eucalypt forests, dry foothills eucalypt forest, rugged gorges woodlands, and non-eucalypt coastal types. The map includes a table which lists areal estimates for each ecosystem, including area outside the NRCMA region and pre-1750 area.; Albeit an improved product, the final map was assembled from two existing layers which have major limitations on private land, including an unsuitable vegetation; classification and a broad and often unreliable API layer. It is thus recommended that the product be used only in the interim by the NRCMA to support identification; and prioritisation of high conservation value vegetation, and that any attempt to reconcile the map with local landscapes be done with due caution.; ; The original NRCMA Veg layer is in grid format but was converted to polygons. Purpose |
In conjunction with a biodiversity forecasting toolkit developed by DEC, the new map is used to assist the NRCMA to identify areas of high conservation value and thus prioritise areas for on-ground works. |

Lineage |
1 - With recent veg mapping (post CRAFTI), Ecological converted these veg mapping datasets to Forest Ecosystem (FE) equivalents then converted to grid. These datasets included;; - Nambucca Shire Council Mapping; - Red Rock- Corindi vegetation mapping; - RBG mapping of Guyra 100k tile; - Greater Taree City Council mapping; ; Once converted to grid they were merged (with priority) over the top of the grid version of CRAFTI mapping (also converted to FEs). The polygon versions of the above mentioned datasets have been acquired and unioned back into whole polygon version. These fine scale datasets were given priority. ; The topological problems with this version is that water bodies/esturaies/lakes and some cleared lands have not been tagged or included as the whole polygon version does not contain a line boundary.; 2 -Forest Ecosystem derivation/classification was conducted where fine scale mapping existed at the time, this predominantly being RN17 and NRAC mapping. These polygons were mainly split into finer scale FE's although in rare cases some were amalgamated. The NRCMA veg has retagged these polygons with 1 ecosystem each thus losing detail. In some cases there may be an improvement but mostly detail is lost.; 3 - Where expert refinement occurred (mainly freehold) for the NRCMA layer there is an improvement in spatial accuracy and FE attribution. It is still undetermined whether all freehold FE mapping has been improved.; 4 - Extant vegetation statistics have been extracted from the RFA pre 1750 layer and when trying to determine new statistics for subsets of this study area errors will occur. This is a result of the derivation of pre1750 being a separate process to the reworking of NRCMA. |
