Abstract |
Vegetation mapping for part of the Peak Hill 1:100,000 mapsheet. Vegetation polygons attributed with dominant overstorey species and various land features through aerial photograph interpretation of contact prints at a scale of either 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 (1995). Polygons were attributed using the API pathway described in Central West and Lachlan CMA Vegetation Mapping reports (DEC 2006a and DEC 2006b). Extensive ground truthing was undertaken to attribute the polygons with species information. VIS_ID 4164 |

Lineage |
The NSW Department of Environment & Conservation (DEC) was contracted by Central West and Lachlan Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) to produce an extant and 'pre-clearing' vegetation map for the two catchments. After an extensive audit of existing vegetation data, it was found that approx 2 million hectares of the study area, mainly in the central tablelands, had little or no vegetation information. Given time and resource constraints, the gaps were filled using air photo interpretation (API) to delineate broad vegetation groups based on overstorey combinations. API was undertaken jointly by DECCW staff (H. Knight and A. Jowett). Vegetation polygons were attributed with dominant overstorey species and various land features through aerial photograph interpretation of contact prints at a scale of either 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 (availablility was 1995). The mapping covers part of the Peak Hill 1:100,000 mapsheet. Polygons were attributed using the API pathway described in Central West and Lachlan CMA Vegetation Mapping project (DECC 2006a and DECC 2006b). Areas with a tree crown cover percentage (CCP) of greater than or equal to 5% were mapped, along with a range of special features (e.g. grasslands or rainforests). The minimum polygon size delineated by mappers was 25ha (continuous vegetation), with the exception of remnant vegetation (10ha) and special features (5ha). All linework was digitised and rectified by a separate sub-contractor (Pintech Pty Ltd, Melbourne). The ultimate product for CMAs was mapping of broad vegetation types (BVTs) described in the project reports (DEC 2006a, DEC 2006b). The overstorey combinations recorded by API interpreters were manually allocated to the final list of CMA BVTs by DECC botanists. Supplementary Information This dataset was updated in October 2010. Error checking and attribute modification was undertaken by DECCW staff in Dubbo Macquarie & Wingewarra St offices.Codestrings were expanded into descriptive terms and errors were fixed. Some BVT attribution was amended. The linework was not altered. |
