Abstract |
The vegetation of Midkin Nature Reserves is described and mapped (scale 1:50 000). Four communities are defined based on classification (Kulczynski association). These four communities were mapped based on ground truthing, air photo interpretation and landform. Almost all of the reserve is dominated by the Eucalyptus coolabah (Coolibah) Eucalyptus populnea (Poplar Box) assemblage. Much of the reserve has been disturbed in the past, some areas still have not recovered from past clearing and grazing practices. Two of the four communities are listed as endangered ecological communities within the Darling Riverine Plains. The other two described vegetation units are likely to be primarily of a derived nature and will require rehabilitation. Most communities are of generally a woodland structure, though some sections are shrubland and grasslands. This project was commissioned by NPWS Western Branch Northern Plains Region (ROCU), Narrabri office. NPWS staff have undertaken ground truthing and ascertained that there are some inconsistencies between vegetation communities described and mapped in this report and vegetation types observable in Midkin NR. Specifically, Coolibah-dominated woodland (constituting the state and federal threatened ecological community) and wetland vegetation were not described or separately mapped. The observed discrepancies were not able to be rectified during the term of the contract. Please consider these inconsistencies when using the dataset for undertaking reserve-scale operational, planning or environmental assessment activities on NPWS-managed reserves. VIS_ID 4021 |

Lineage |
Linework depicting an observed or inferred vegetation type boundary was marked on aerial photograph acetate overlays during stereoscopic interpretation of colour aerial photography at 1:50,000 scale. Each mapped polygon was assigned to a pre-determined vegetation type (see abstract for vegetation classification details), which was marked on the overlay. Linework was transferred to hardcopy topographic mapsheets, scanned and the images georectified in ArcView 3.3 GIS to give a spatial reference. Then the scanned image was used as a backdrop to digitise linework on-screen. The digital lines were converted to polygons and the shapefile cleaned to remove gaps, overlaps and wayward nodes. A code denoting the vegetation community was then attributed to each polygon based on the hardcopy linework. Another dataset consulted for other reserve planning activities in the region is the 'NHT Landscapes - north west slopes and plains' mapping by Peasley and Walsh (2001). However, in this location, there is a spatial error in the dataset resulting in the linework being offset several hundred metres to the east. The Regional Fire Management Strategy (RFMS) for Midkin NR uses new linework resulting from on-screen interpretation of ADS high resolution aerial imagery. Vegetation types have been classified into broader groups according to dominant species, structure, soil type and landscape position. |
