Lineage

Vegetation sampled in 312 sites, each 20m by 20m, sites grouped using PATN statistical analysis program. Numerically derived floristic groups mapped at 1:25,000 scale from aerial photographs with extensive ground truthing in February 1998. API data transferred to 1:25,000 map sheet films using a transfer scope and then digitised into Environmental-Resource Mapping System (ERMS) GIS. Errors corrected using ERMS prior to conversion to ArcView shapefile using wpo2shp.exe program. Published in Cunninghamia 6(3).

Explanation

The dataset is complete with reference to range and field verification. Area of smallest polygon is 1 Ha. Riparian shrubland (community 23) is restricted to narrow strips along watercourses and is not shown on the maps. Small clumps of isolated trees in land >70% cleared are not delineated, also native grasslands remaining after the removal of woody canopy species are not shown on the map.

The GIS package ERMS was used to perofrm a topological consistency check to ensure all polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines, all polygons are labelled once and there are no duplications.

Precision: GIS data accurate to 25 metres. Determination: Deductive estimate. Comparison with 1:25,000 layer data indicated good correlation but with errors of the order indicated above in terms of position.

The 'name' field indicates the floristic vegetation classifications included in the mapping. These have been derived from statistical analysis, interpreted from aerial photographs, ground truthed and described by botanists from the Royal Botanic Gardens. Information on structure, weediness and disturbance is also included.
