The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area is located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, about 420 kilometres north of Sydney, and 510 kilometres south of Brisbane. The area is located adjacent to the Hastings River, the Pacific Highway, the Oxley Highway and the North Coast railway line. Major population centres in the local government area are Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, Wauchope, Lake Cathie and Kendall, totalling over 78,100 people in an area of 3,686.1 km2

There is a flood policy, the purpose of which is to outline matters to be taken into consideration by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council when exercising its environmental assessment and planning functions in relation to Development in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area. Wrights Creek Flood Study has been conducted as is significant in the area, the most notable floods occurring in 1962, 1963, 1975, 1995 and 2002.
